Life cycle
- Queens overwinter in soil. Eggs are laid in late spring
- Larvae hath 3-4 weeks later. Larvae feed on secretions from the queen’s salivary glands until the first worker ants emerge.
- Workers ants continue with larvae care, nest building and food foraging
Nest Locations
- Often outdoors in soil and below paving slabs on the sunny side of buildings. Nest locations can be identified by the presence of finely powered soil around nest exit holes.
Swarming characteristics
- Fertile males are produced later in the season and swarm altogether.
- Mating between queens and fertile males takes place on the wing mid to late summer. Males perish after mating. Queen snap off wings before building initial nest.
Life cycle
- Foraging worker ants follow well-defined trails around food sources. Sweet foods are preferred but high protein food will also be taken.
Nest Locations
Black ant colonies can reach in size up to around 40,000 workers in rare cases but 4,000–7,000 is around average. A queen can live up to around 15 years and it has been claimed that some have lived for 30 years. Queens while in the early stages of founding can have two to three other queens in the nest.
